1st Beetley Scout Group

from Colin Fisher ex GSL, now President of 1st Beetley Scout Group

The first ever meeting of the Group (for young people) was for Cub Scouts on the 3rd March 1983. The Group was first registered in December 1983. A Maroon Neckerchief was chosen as our colour.

Meetings were held in the main hall at the recently built Primary School on Elmham Road, Beetley. What equipment/games we had was stored in a wooden box and kept in the toilet just off the hall.

First Cub Camp was a weekend camp at Garvestone in June 1985.

We wanted our ‘own’ place to meet, one we could get messy without too much worry! So in 1986 we approached the Parish Council and they agreed to give us use of the old corrugated iron changing hut on Beetley playing field next to the posh new brick built changing rooms.

The Scout Troop was formed in February 1989 with 9 ex Beetley Cub Scouts.

To mark this step in our Groups development we decided to add a white border to our neckerchief.

Girls came into the Scout Troop in 1992.

A Beaver Colony was formed in 1993, but met in Beetley Village Hall initially, as the old hut was considered to risky for the little people!!

The condition of the old tin meeting hut drove our efforts to increase fundraising, and seek as much as we could in grants, until we were able to build a new wooden HQ on it s present site leased from the Parish Council. The new Hut opened in September 1994.
